Real Madrid v PSG UCL Round of 16 1st leg just ended 3-1 in favour of Real Madrid. Cristiano Ronaldo managed to score 2 goals, Marcelo one and Adrian Rabiot scored for PSG.
The scoreline of Real Madrid v PSG is little bit misleading, as 3-1 is flattering Real Madrid quite a bit. All in all it was very equal in terms of possession, chances created etcetera. The refereeing might be under some scrutiny from both teams. The PK awarded to Real Madrid was soft, to say the least. And if it was a penalty, it should have been a 2nd yellow for Lo Celso. Also Neymar should have received his 2nd yellow for diving on 2 occasions, 1st of those the referee actually whistled a free kick for Real Madrid, but didn’t show a 2nd yellow.
You just can’t rule out Ronaldo in Champions League, not now, not before, probably not in many years to come. Today, he wasnt too much involved, but he was in the right place at the right time. Out of characteristically he also tracked back, ran A LOT off the ball, few times successfully intercepting a pass here and there. Overall his performance was good, more importantly he showed character which then inspired his teammates.
Man of the match for Real Madrid v PSG? Well that is a hard one. Sergio Ramos played a solid match, preventing a PSG goal here and there. Areola played a stellar match in PSG goal, despite conceding 3. Keylor Navas in Real Madrid goal also played a great game. Modric was back to his best, Isco was amazing as usual, despite lacking the end product, still. Marcelo was as good as ever offensively, despite lagging behind on few occasions on defensive duty. Asensio was a game changer coming on as a substitution for last 15 minutes. But Cristiano Ronaldo made the difference with his goals, but he also played a solid game overall. All aspects covered, CR7 would have to be the man of the match.
Real Madrid v PSG scoreline was 3-1, but at 1-1 PSG had 2 or 3 incredible goalscoring opportunities. Had they scored on any of those, the outcome would have been completely different. Real Madrid flaws were there for all to see, midfield was constantly 5 feet too late while defending. Which resulted in multiple close calls. The 4-3-3 which Zidane usually uses, just simply doesn’t work. Not with Karim Benzema leading the line, he has lost his goalscoring ability completely, and he’s not creating space with his runs like he used to in the previous seasons.
Is the Real Madrid v PSG tie over after 1st leg?
Is there a chance for PSG comeback? Well, 1 year ago, PSG were leading Barcelona 4-0 after the 1st leg, but Barcelona battled back for the famous 6-5 aggregate victory. The man behind that result was not Lionel Messi, it was Neymar. And he was a constant threat for the Parisians today as well. Anything is possible with Neymar on the team, add Kylian M’Bappe to the equation and there is every chance PSG makes a fight for the return leg. It’s an open contest, Real Madrid might have a fair advantage going into the return leg, but ANYTHING is possible. PSG comeback wouldnt not be that big of a shock, not after their performance today.
For Real Madrid, is the tie done and buried already? Well, as long as Cristiano Ronaldo stays in shape, he only needs so much space to change the game. His record for last 12 UCL matches speaks for themselves; 21 goals in THE LAST 12 UCL matches. That includes 9 for the Group stage this year, and then the knockout stage goals in last seasons tournament. But some adjustments are needed for the starting XI, because THAT 4-4-3 will not work, mark my words.
There is a HUGE difference if the game finished 2-1, as opposed to the 3-1. But still, IF PSG gets an early goal in Paris to go 1-0 up, they only need 1 goal from that point on. Then again if Real Madrid scores a goal, the complexity changes again. Therefore Real Madrid has to go in the return leg with an offensive mindset. If they go to Paris, just to defend and they will dig their own grave, essentially.
All in all Real Madrid v PSG was thoroughly entertaining, just as great or even better than expected. In the other UCL Round of 16 1st leg Liverpool won away at Porto 0-5, with Sadio Mane bagging a hatrick and Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino both scoring once. Tomorrow there is some quality football as well,as the Europa League round of 32 matches will be played throughout Europe.
