It would seem that the English Premier League is infact a two horse race, between Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur.
Even if Arsenal and Manchester City still has a chance to finish first, but that is very unlikely. Leicester would have to lose all 4 of their remaining matches. And even then it would likely be Tottenham lifting the trophy. Because the English Premier League table looks like this right now:
If we assume that both Manchester City and Arsenal win the 34th round match, and rise to 63 points they are still 10 behind Leicester and 5 behind Tottenham. And when there is 4 matchdays left, meaning 12 possible points to win, it means that Leicester would have to completely freeze out. Highly unlikely, having seen many of their matches, they play smart, highly tactical football. Where as Tottenham plays attractive football, and arguably are the best team in English Premier League right now. But even Tottenham need Leicester to lose 2 of the 4 matches left, while winning their own 4 last matches to have a go at the title.
I would go as far as saying that Arsenal and Manchester City are out of the title race, thats it. They still need the points to keep Manchester United and West ham from taking that ever important top4 finish from them, and thats what they should concentrate on. Manchester City, surprisingly, still are in the Champions League and will meet Real Madrid in the Semi-final. They might want to save the energy for that battle. Even though both competitions seem far fetched at the moment, but never say never.
So how does the final stretch of the English Premier League 2015-2016 look like for Leicester and Tottenham?
Lets see, first up Leicester:
- R35 Leicester vs Swansea
- R36 Manchester United vs Leicester
- R37 Leicester vs Everton
- R38 Chelsea vs Leicester
Last 4 matches for Leicester looks tough, really REALLY tough in fact. Manchester United and Chelsea away from home, Swansea and Everton at home. The home matches seems doable, though Everton might be difficult. Those away matches at Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge look rather insane. The most common scoreline in Leicester matches this season has been 1-0. 0-1 looks like a very doable number in all of the 4 matches, they defend well and with Vardy & Mahrez they dont need that many chances to score a goal. But i would say those away matches at Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge decide the English Premier League 2015-2016 for Leicester. They need points, in fact, they need to win the home games, then a draw from each away match would be enough to clinch the title with 81points. Tottenham can finish at 80 points.
Last four matches for Tottenham?
- R35 Tottenham vs West Brom
- R36 Chelsea vs Tottenham
- R37 Tottenham vs Southampton
- R38 Newcastle vs Tottenham
Hard-ish last stretch for tottenham as well. Chelsea are always dangerous, well sometimes anyway. Hell, they are usually dangerous at the derby no matter their form. Southampton chasing UEL/UCL qualifying position, which means it wont be easy match either. And the last matchday vs Newcastle, if Newcastle are still fighting for their English Premier League life at that round it will be a classic battle.
After going through the last 4 matchdays, you would have to give the benefit of doubt for Leicester. Leicester can end the season with a tally of 85points. Where as maximum points for Tottenham is 80. As a somewhat neutral EPL viewer, it would be amazing if Leicester won the English premier league. That would mean the big 4, 5, 6 teams would have to re-invent themselves. Meaning the summer transfer records would be broken once again. Iff Leicester in fact do win the title, that would give hope to many other “smaller” teams, who thus far have only played for their Survival in the pinnacle of English football. And that would already spice up the next season considerably.
Another rather interesting factor in the English premier league, is the relegation battle, as always. Aston Villa has already sealed their relegation, oh boy its been a miserable couple of years for them. Arguably the “biggest” team EVER, in the history of EPL (the current form)to be relegated. Also one of the newcastle based clubs look certain to drop, it might even be both. Though Norwich is very much still in the battle sitting 1 point ahead of Sunderland and 3 above Newcastle, with 1 game more played. Who do you think will join Aston Villa, to the Championship in May?
