So there it is; Juventus, AS Monaco, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are the 4 UEFA Champions League semifinal teams. Overall the quarterfinal match-ups were very entertaining, for various different reasons. Real Madrid v Bayern Munich match will be talked about for the remainder of the season. That match will also be the focal point when UEFA starts to consider the video refereeing. Which HAS to come, as soon as possible. Because there were numerous incidents in the quarterfinals, especially on that Real vs Bayern match, from both teams perspective. Not to mention the infamous Barcelona v PSG match round of 16 tie.
If you had to guess the 4 UEFA Champions League semifinal teams, lets say, at the time of the round of 16 matches. Would you have gotten the teams right? I know i wouldn’t have. On first sight Monaco is the team i would NOT have included in my guess. Ironic thing is, Monaco looks like the most exciting team of them all!
Juventus vs Barcelona which just ended 0-0, was a let down to be fair. The match could have used a Barcelona goal early on to make it a thriller. But Barcelona managed just ONE attempt on target throughout the match, you can’t score a goal like that. Even the usually clinical Lionel Messi was just awful tonight. Dont think ive ever seen his shots and crosses miss their mark as badly as today (except that one threaded cross for Alba early on).
Juventus as a UEFA Champions League semifinal team? Well, they have kept their goal untouched for 563 minutes, was it? But their style of play was perfect vs Barcelona. Now they will face a team that is NOT possession based, and therefore much more dangerous on the counter. I wouldn’t call Juventus a favourite to win the trophy as of now, but they do have a great chance. I would say that each of the 4 teams have almost equal chances to win the competition. Much depends on the UEFA Champions League semifinal draw on Friday.
Monaco as a UEFA Champions League semifinal team? Monaco has eliminated Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund already. And even if every single team remaining are likely tougher than those two, they have been impressive. Maybe even impressive enough to push through to the Final in Cardiff. For arguments sake, lets say Monaco draw Juventus on Friday. I would dare to say that Monaco might have the upper hand on that tie. But i guess we will see how the draw goes for Monaco and the other teams.
Atletico Madrid as a UEFA Champions League semifinal team? Been there done that, Atleti are a regular in the end competition nowadays. No team wants to draw the on Friday either. Regardless of how they played vs Leicester, they are a magnificent team. The key word being “TEAM”, when one talks about Atletico Madrid. And despite being a TEAM, Atletico has so much quality on their roster, including one of the best players today in Antoine Griezmann. There is Ronaldo and Messi. Then there is Neymar and Griezmann. And then there are the rest.
Real Madrid as a UEFA Champions League semifinal team? Well, it is the 7th time in a row for Real Madrid in UEFA Champions League semifinals. Coincidense? Not even a little bit. Say what you want about the controversial qf match, Real Madrid was the better team throughout and 100% deserved to win. Likely the best team in the world right now, even when not performing at their best. It’s a scary situation thinking that they are not firing on all cylinders.
The UEFA Champions League semifinal draw will be on Friday, after which, we know who faces who. And now we know; Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid 4th season in a row the Madrid club’s face off in UEFA Champions League knockout matches, no final this meeting this time though. And the other match-up is AS Monaco vs Juventus. The semifinals will be awesome.
